Scorecard
England somehow lost another one-day international from a seemingly unbeatable position, thanks to an improbable last-wicket stand from Pakistan in Lahore.
Three days after their 430-run defeat to Sri Lanka, Harry Brook’s side suffered defeat despite reducing Pakistan to 154-9 in pursuit of 242.
Shadab Khan was the architect of Pakistan’s unexpected victory, scoring a magnificent unbeaten 113 – the highest score by a number eight in an ODI match.
He was supported by Haris Rauf, Pakistan’s number 11, who contributed seven to their unbroken 89-run 10th-wicket partnership – a comfortable new record for a last-wicket pair to win an ODI.
In scarcely believable scenes, Shadab was given lbw to Gus Atkinson on 97, with 21 runs still required.
The players shook hands before Shadab called for a speculative review. DRS found a faint inside edge, and after the decision was overturned, Henry Crocombe, making his debut, watched from the field as the winning boundary was struck with 17 balls to spare.
This means England are all but out of the tri-series – and their elimination will be confirmed if Sri Lanka beat Pakistan on Tuesday.
A second collapse in as many matches raises significant concerns for England, who looked on course for victory despite being bowled out for just 241.
Ben Duckett scored a fine 105 – the only century of the innings – while Sam Curran and Gus Atkinson both passed 20 runs in what were otherwise faultless conditions.
Nevertheless, England were on course thanks to a relentless collective display from their bowlers. Jamie Overton bowled 10 overs in one spell for 3-43.
Then came Shadab and another perplexing defeat for England, who could be eliminated before playing their final match against Sri Lanka on Thursday.
