The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has announced the postponement of 24 Copa del Rey first-round matches, which were scheduled to take place on Wednesday.

This decision comes in the wake of devastating news reporting the deaths of at least 30 people and injuries to at least 80 in a train accident in the province of Toledo, Spain.

A collision between two high-speed trains occurred near Urda station, on the line connecting Madrid and Seville, on Wednesday morning.

“As a sign of respect and solidarity with all the victims of the tragic train accident that occurred early Wednesday in the province of Toledo, the Spanish Football Federation has issued an order to suspend the 24 matches belonging to the first round of the [Copa del Rey],” the RFEF said in a statement. “These were originally scheduled to be played this evening.”

“The RFEF will provide information in due course regarding the amended tournament schedule and the final dates and times for the postponed matches.”

It added: “The entire Spanish football community stands united in its grief for this tragedy and has placed itself at the disposal of the authorities to assist the victims of this devastating incident.”
