A cruise ship sustained “severe damage” after colliding with two container ships while leaving Germany amidst stormy weather.
Tui Cruises’ ship Mein Schiff 3 was leaving the city of Bremerhaven, Germany, on Sunday, when it collided with container ships, including the MSC Victorine.
According to a statement from Bremen police, the ship was scheduled to depart for the Canary Islands with the assistance of tugboats when it was struck by a windstorm and “drifted towards two container ships” moored near the pier.
The force said: “The smaller container ship sustained minor damage, while the larger vessel suffered severe damage. The collision caused several meters of the port side of the larger container ship to be opened and its container guides to be deformed.”
Bremen police added: “The ship sustained severe damage to its lifeboats, associated cranes, and hull.
“The maritime safety authority issued a sailing ban for all three ships. Water police are still conducting further investigations.”
Footage shared by passengers shows the ship colliding with the other vessel as it began a 20-night trip to the Canary Islands.
The Mein Schiff 3 debuted in 2014 with a capacity of 2,506 passengers and 1,000 crew members.
No injuries among passengers or crew were reported after the incident.
A Tui Cruises spokesperson told The Mirror: “We can confirm that, as Mein Schiff 3 was departing Bremerhaven late on the afternoon of October 25, a collision occurred with two container ships.
“The safety of our guests and crew is our top priority. Therefore, we are very relieved that, according to current information, no one was injured.”
The cruise line added that the planned Canary Islands cruise was canceled due to safety concerns following the incident.
The Independent contacted Tui Cruises for comment.
